Ravnica unseen heavy weights

well today whilst thinking about two cards a thought crossed my mind. "what wins magic games" and the simple answer is CMC. what is cmc? you might ask well it stands for 'converted mana cost' and what that means is how much Mana does it cost to play a card. How can that be the key to winning magic games?? an excellent question rob!  let me break it down to you how i have come to see it over the last few years. each turn is an opportunity to win, if you have a turn that you cant do anything thats a turn wasted you minds as well given your opponant an extra turn. some games that i have played have lasted just two turns and others more then id like to admit. but the bottom line comes down to cmc.

most creatures have what i call relative cmc. for example..

Centaur healer is a 3/3 for 3. and thats what you would expect as a medium. the creature is a good card it comes out and other creatures that cost about the same have about the same power and toughness. so if each turn you are ahead in your power and toughness but for a lower mana cost your going to win. but doing that is harder then it sounds. you could "ramp" so you would pay for a permanent that gives you an opportunity to increase your mana so your next turn you will be a 'turn ahead' of your opponent or  you play a bigger creature that has what i call defects. like..

this guy on turn three would be scary! a 5/6 with evasion in this case flying. this would mean you have a good chance of winning but doing that would mean pulling off some painful combinations that have an unlikely chance of happening. as a result he isnt played much, which is common. but there are a few cards that i just dont know why they are not played very much.

these two for example. both of them are just really great cards! they are stronger then what they cost and they dont have any drawbacks. why aren't people playing them?? and here it comes..

A CHALLENGE

To build a deck that uses 4 of each of these creatures and to make an opponent realize they are really good cards.

you all might be looking at me like

but after you try this and you realize i have that your CMC is the most important thing in the game you will be like

and with that i bid you all a good night and a happy deck plotting. :D

How many snipes could a guttersnipe snipe if a guttersnipe could snipe guttersnipes

so today i am looking into mr guttersnipe and how useful he is as a creature and what type of decks he should be played in...
so first things first- incase you have absolutely no idea what i am talking about check this badboy out ... presenting the emo goblin

So the longer you think about it the better he gets. when this guy is out control players playing izzet are smiling because in addition to countering myspell. you also slap me in the face for 2. thats not nice... there are some really nice decklists that he works amazingly with. including that scumbag delver thing. both creatures work in instant sorcery heavy decks and, like burning vengence, make your spells a bit more usefull. legendary rob mentioned him before but i thought i would just add my 2 cents to the emo goblin.

  • NO 1: guttersnipe is very squishy. if you cant protect this little guy he will be the next target for the next removal spell your opponent can get his hands on he will almost guaranteed plonk it on your emo goblin.
  • NO 2: He requires a deck that has many spells. previous to M13 it wasnt really a good idea to play mono red. since then there is enough awesome stuff to play mono but its still pretty creature based. vexing devil you cant really play this guy in mono because there is no way to protect him. but then again you wouldnt need to
  • NO 3: When midrange decks do get a creature onto the field you need to either have 2 or 3 burn spells to have enough to kill it or some other way of removing the creature. but a craterhoof staring at your face is going to lose you the match if you cant get rid of it.
  • NO 4: I am going to try build a deathtouch control rakdos deck where i will give the emo goblin deathtouch and regen and see what happens...
